Title: Matthew MacFadyen as Darcy
Description: Like him....Love him?
Cecilia Norwood - June 29, 2007 04:37 AM (GMT)
Hey everyone!!!!
I thought I would put this question out there. What do you think of Matthew MacFadyen, the actor who plays the lovely character Fitzwilliam Darcy in the new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice? Love him? Hate him? In between? What do you think?
I personally adore Matthew MacFadyen. I first saw him in the series Spooks, and thought he was quite the dreamboat. When I realized he was playing one of my favourite Jane Austen characters I couldn’t have been more pleased. Though I adored Colin Firth in the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice I think Matthew MacFadyen did a good job as the stoic Mr. Darcy. I so love that character.

Well, lesse now.
He looks very wet and washed-up to me, not at ALL like I imagined Darcy. I'd say I hated him, but it depends on what you're comparing this hatred to.
The fact that Kiera Knightly was Elizabeth like... omg. Now THAT is hatred. There could not have been a WORSE Elizabeth (except Paris Hilton) with that HORRIBLE pout-thing and... o man, don't get me started. *cannot abide Kiera Knightly* <--btw, any newbs what read this, take note of that. I look at Kiera Knightly-avved charries like they was the Pox.
And the clothes! EW EW EW! SO not right! And the accents! No no no! The hair! The decor! ARG ARG ARG!
Okay, I'm trashing on your movie, sawwy. But yeah, I didn't like it. At all.
BBC version though... OMG I LOVED IT. Ha—h'm. Yes. Anyway... me shut up now.
Colin Firth! Colin Firth! Colin Firth! Colin Firth! Colin Firth! Colin Firth! Colin Firth! Colin Firth! Colin Firth! Colin Firth!

No problem with me if you trash it, this is all about sharing your opinion. I preferred the BBC version as well (I own it and am watching it now!!!), but my liking for Matthew existed before I saw him as Darcy, so that of course affected how I felt about his performance in the new version.
Colin Firth is an entirely different subject...*faints* I simply adore that man, and as Darcy....*faints again* I would watch him in any movie :kissy:
As for Keira Knightley, what is up with that pouting thing? It was so annoying in PoTC, and she seems to do that all the time.*sigh* I thought I was the only one who noticed that habit of hers.

I liked him, and he IS quite the dreamboat [I like that term]. I also just love the character of Mr. Darcy... so it would be hard for me to hate the dreamboaty Matthew. I don't really have a huge opinion to rant about, but surprisingly I loved the movie. Then again, I haven't seen the BBC version to compare so maybe when I see that my opinions will sway.
I hate to say it, but I think Keira Knightley is really pretty <shifts away from the hatred> I could do without the pouting thing as well but she's not completely horrid.
Still, I have to say... the book would beat any movie. It just can't capture Jane Austen's brilliance.
Cecilia Norwood - June 29, 2007 06:05 AM (GMT)
*applause* I have to agree, the book surpasses any movie any day. Keira's pout may annoy me, but I do think she is attractive. *hides away from Mjinga* I'm sorry, but I can't say she's the pox....Paris Hilton...yes!!!

:tarandfeathers: <--that is all I have to say about Kiera Knightly.
Oh, except that it's not that she's ugly (except for the pout), it's that she's horrid for the part. *nodnod* I didn't mind it in Pirates as much because Elizabeth Swann was a freaking Mary Sue anyway (King of the Pirates? By George! Come on...). She was a good choice for that role. Saved me from hating a perfectly good actress and just made me dislike her more. They should have left it with the first movie, and then just made the music from the second and third.
Hihi, I'm going off topic. Oh, and the book beats any film hallow, yes. But Vienne, the reason I liked the BBC version so much was because it stuck by the book quite well. It was long enough that the got the flavour of it without chopping out the long conversations and speeding up things like the movie version.
Oh, and it had actually period-appropriate clothing, and hairstyles, and manors and carriages and stuff. In fact it was just great all around. *nodnod*
And it had Colin Firth...

I thought Matthew did a decent job of looking sulky and entitled, which was basically the impression I got from Darcy while reading the book. I am not a huge fan of Austen, though, so I can't say that I had any expectations when going into that movie.
I have to say I loved Tom Hollander in it, though. Tom is awesome in all of the movies (a whopping four) I've seen him in.
Mjinga - June 29, 2007 06:39 AM (GMT)
*pops in again to remark that Tom Hollander is teh bomb*
 So schmexy. Especially in the Beckett-wig...
Katherine Townsend - June 29, 2007 07:07 AM (GMT)
Beckett and Colin Firth as Darcy are hott, dude.
I don't care for the Keira Knightley version at all I'm afraid...nor for Matthew McFayden >.< He seems so...eh, he's just not my type.
It's not so much Keira's pout as her chin. She juts it out in the most annoying fashion.
BBC rules and always will. Jennifer Ehle was amazing (how come everyone's trashin' on the bad Liz and oohing over the men? Give the girl a little credit!) <3 <3 <3
Cecilia Norwood - June 29, 2007 01:16 PM (GMT)
Forgive us, we should give credit where it's due and Jennifer Ehle was a wonderful Lizzie, and Tom Hollander was great :D I haven't seen him in any other films, sad to say, but I will have to look out for him.

Evidently I need to read this novel, and also watch the BBC-series - which won't be too hard, because my mommy has it on dvd. I only have to get it back from my aunt, who's borrowing it atta moment. :)
THEEEN I will make MYYYY all-important comments on the matter. :P
Pfffft.
EDIT: And I'm guessing the girl will get more credit from me... <.< Since I generally lukk more at demm than the boys...

Kirs, when you read the novel and watch the series, I will officially be the only person on this board that hasn't done so. :headwall: I simply never came across it...

Oh! I simply can't choose between Colin Firth and Matthew MacFadyen...It's like making someone choose between their children...Except obviously not as terrible...And I s'pose that's not a great example seeing as how I have no children but whatever. They're both wonderful.
By the way, has anyone seen Becoming Jane? It's about Jane Austen and It was actually fairly good in my opinion, but then again, I'm impossibly, ridiculously, unconditionally in love with James McAvoy so I pretty much drool over anything he's in. Anyway, if you liked the Pride and Prejudice movie you'll love this movie.
Cecilia Norwood - July 5, 2007 01:47 AM (GMT)
I haven't seen it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I saw some clips and it looks like it would be something i'd like to watch. :D
On another note...I just about lost my mind today....My Pride and Prejudice (BBC version) has gone missing!!!!! :heartcry: :( No one has seen it and it's not where I left it. My cousin was over here so I am praying she borrowed it...or else....
Mjinga - July 5, 2007 04:37 AM (GMT)
!!! Awful! It's not possible to LIVE without it! *hopes you get it back*
Beta and Kris are zombies. :dead:

No luck finding it yet, but I'm still looking, however until then I snagged it from a friend and plan to have a Pride and Prejudice marathon tonight!! I even baked brownies to go with ;) :D It was the slowest brownie making ever since I had to be really careful mixing everything with my neck and all...but I conquered!!! WOOT!!!!!!
Mjinga - July 7, 2007 10:57 PM (GMT)
*throws confetti* Woot! Can I jon you? I'll bring cookies too! *proffers Russian tea cakes*
