IC InformationName:William Bailey
Avatar: Harry Eden
Occupation: Street Kid
Age: 13
Gender: Male
Appearance: William is an average thirteen year old boy in that he is rather awkwardly built, he has broad shoulders and a lean muscled chest from various labour during his life. His legs are, like his shoulders rather stocky while his arms are muscled but not to an extent that anyone would notice it.
He is a rather small lad, making him look broader and more muscled than he actually is. He stands at little over 5 foot three and weighs in at no more than 9 1/2 stone, his physical bulk is due to excessive work loads and hard labour, but how else is a poor orphan boy to make his way in the world?
Wild brown hair and steely grey eyes frame his face; they are the essence of William Bailey. A top his head he adorns an old hat he stole some time ago from an elderly man, it is his most prized possession.
The teenager also dons an overcoat and shirt, his trousers are slightly too short in the leg and he wears a pair of old leather boots. His general attire is that of a street urchin because, after all he has lived most of his life on the streets.
Will’s complexion is pale, due to the horrible conditions of London (where he spent the majority of his life). His general appearance is grimy, his cheeks and hands always smeared in dirt. The child even has the odd cigar burn on the flesh of his arms and one or two nasty scars on the backs of his legs from a harsh crack of the belt.
There is no questioning what life the boy came from or what life he is likely to lead. Physically he is the pinnacle of working class Britain. His teeth are probably the only part of him that is not dirt stained and off colour.
Personality: This teenager is a cunning young pup, he has his moments where he schemes up a plan to gain a hearty meal and often it turns out nicely. William has learn to put up a front and a lot of folk take him to be a charming boy, until he becomes tired of the act or of the way he is being treated. In spite of this he is a child lacking in manners, he has no etiquette and shows no respect to his elders or betters – William hates to be looked down on.
William has little fear, he does not fear a beating nor does he fear being starved. The boy sees himself as an opportunist; he does not look back on his actions and has no regrets, the brown haired teenager is always eager to try his luck pushing people to see how far he can go.
For all the bad things one could say about William he is nothing if not street wise, he knows the rules of the lowest class. He knows that a thief is only as good as his last catch; he also knows that if you don’t watch your back no one will. The boy has a strong sense of self and knows how far he can go and what he can and can not do, he will not risk his survival over something worth little money.
The boy is a lady chaser, so to speak. He plays naïve young maids for fools, tricking them in to giving him a slice of their employer’s bread or a cut of his meat. At times he is caught out, eager to brag of his many triumphs over the police (who by the way aren’t as fast as you would imagine), the boy can sometimes get himself in to trouble by opening his mouth at the wrong time and has been known – on many occasions – to talk out of turn.
You could, I suppose say the child was rather brazen, though he can when necessary be overly calculating his generally demeanour is one of a bold and unashamed young man. He draws his strength from hatred toward those who have things better than himself and while he has little education, as he can neither read or write he does have a shocking knowledge of many things, a boy his age should perhaps not know – street smarts taught to him by the various prostitutes and opportunists he has met.
History: Nathanial Brighton was a detective, I say was because now not many men are sure what he does, it is believed he has spiralled in to alcoholism and that is why he stumbled upon the world of prostitutes – his mistake. The man was so successful and liked by his peers that it came as such a shock when he just stopped coming to work. Rumours spread that it was all to do with his wife’s death, she had died in child birth and the babe had died alongside his mother. This had shaken the man up so much, it was said he lost all hope and that was how the boy who stood now in front of three policemen and a very pissed off judge had come in to being. He was the accident of a wild passionate two shilling night between a washed up detective and a cheap harlot named Susanna Bailey.
The boy’s name was William Bailey and he was five years old, his mother had been killed by a down and out for six pence and he was to be placed in an orphanage. He was stood before the men now on several accusations of theft, none of which could be or needed to be proved. As with all children at this time William was merely disregarded as important and shipped to the closest orphanage that had room to take him, he stayed there for three years.
During his time at the orphanage Will – as the other boys had taken to calling him had fallen in to a slump, he had allowed himself to accept the hardship of the poor and was willing to join his peers in the wild world of unruly behaviour. The child was constantly seeing the wrong end of a belt and had at times been flogged to an extent that he could not walk for days. The life of an orphan was not a pleasant one. In one particular demonstration of his lack of respect William had met a family willing to take him in to their home, of course he would have had to earn his keep but anything is better than nothing. He had shown no manners to the family and received a nasty beating from the master of the orphanage, the gentlemen had been willing to put money in to the building and that meant money in the other man’s pocket. William never forgot that lesson.
As he turned eight Will took his chance to leave, he escaped the oppressive nature of the orphanage and travelled. The boy journeyed for little more than a week before he was picked up by a young woman feeling sorry for the lean little boy limping along the country road not far from London. She took him in willingly and with great hopes, she even convinced her husband to keep the boy as a stable hand. William soon out stayed his welcome; he became careless when saddling the horses and this became a threat to those riding. The child was beaten by the gentlemen of the house, leaving him with three nasty scars on the backs of his legs; he was soon after thrown back out on to the streets.
It was not until he turned ten that he found another ‘home’ an orphanage situated two towns from Lindebo. This orphanage was some what grander than his first. Though the matron and other staff were not the kindest of folks, in fact nor were the boy’s who acted as prefects each eager to get you into trouble even when you were the shyest child there. It was a place William could not bare to be trapped, and after two years he once again escaped to the streets he knew so well.
Now at thirteen, William is once again wandering the streets using tricks he has perfected to make his way in the world and to survive. The boy is looking for a little work to get food in his stomach but don’t expect too much from him…
