Aww...the Mego figures are so cool :D

I'm definately going to hunt down a set one day.

This was what Playmates 9" line were trying to re-capture, yes?

Fatheadcookie - July 29, 2006 11:38 PM (GMT)
Not really I think that they were just trying to make a buck. :D they had already driven the 4 1/2 figure line like a rented mule.

VulcanFanatic - July 30, 2006 01:09 AM (GMT)
I like the 9" playmates figures, and to me it could have been the mego line that inspired them. I think that the playmates figure bodies are more sturdy and durable, but they lack the motion and flexibility of the mego figures and therefore seem inferior to me in that respect. My first thought in 1993 i think it was, when the first 9" inch figures were released, was that Playmates was banking on the Mego generation to buy these figures, and they had me hooked. I have the whole 90 odd figures and many duplicates of some of them, and they are prized possesions IMO.

Artistix - July 30, 2006 05:14 AM (GMT)
I love my 9" figures.

I did not get into them as much as the 4.5" figures as I didn't see many of the 9" figures in stores.

Most I have I bought from people online.

I was very bitter after Playmates left Beverly out of the Insurrection 9" assortment....I didn't collect many after that....I'm such a brat

Wow Artistix, those do look nice.... although that Troi doesn't look quite right to me, but thanks for the shot!

Fatheadcookie - August 6, 2006 04:56 PM (GMT)
She has Peg Bundy's hair only in black. From the show Married with Childern.

Now someone just has to make a custom!

gothneo - August 16, 2006 09:21 PM (GMT)
So... just dress picard in an Al Bundy "No Mam" T-shirt and put Troi in a dress and heels and I think your just about there :o

VulcanFanatic - August 17, 2006 01:21 AM (GMT)
IM thinking that Picard had a little less hair than Al Bundy, maybe not much less. Whats sad about that show is that many people today are more screwed up than the Bundy family :fear:

Those are actually my second figures of Beverly & Troi.

I originally cut their hair off & passed them over to a dollmaker for better hair...

The dollmaker gave them horrendous hair! (Though atleast Troi's was curly) So I bought another figure of each & left them as the company intended.

I'll take some pics of the 'dolled up' versions

Anyone try customizing a Chapel for the Mego line? Uhura is generic enough for people to get away with using a generic blonde doll head for Christine.
Rand would be an easier custom....though the hair would be fun!

Is it me...or does our Artistix have a bit of a hairdo fetish??

gothneo - August 18, 2006 01:05 PM (GMT)
Hmmm..... you may be on to something JulesLuvsShinzon :ph43r:

Yes, i noticed that a good while back, but that is His/Her? choice.....

Artistix - August 19, 2006 07:15 AM (GMT)
I know...I don't know why I keep going on about that!

I don't seem to have shut up since I saw that Nemesis Troi.

I doubt your average straight male fan would go on about a figures hair.

I am happy to ;)

But I realise it is annoying. I promise you now I will not talk about a figures hair again. ;)

I did actually come into this thread to add a pic....though I feel kinda dumb doing so now. Well here it is:

The ones I got back from the Dollmaker with the normal ones.

Fatheadcookie - August 19, 2006 09:04 AM (GMT)
There is a figure that collectors call the Wild Hair Crusher. It is the one that the hair does not have the tape that keeps it tight in the box. Some had it and some did not.

Cpt_Berns - August 19, 2006 09:09 AM (GMT)
Oh, it has been a while since I posted here.

About the Mego figures. I loved them at the time and hated it when the format of action figures changed to "all plastic" figures.

I was happy with the playmates 9" lines, and even more happy when I saw that other manifacturers went that way with their figures as well. Although the 9" Babylon 5 figures looked cheap, some Marvel and DC heroes looked great in that format.

On the 12" side, Playmates figures looked way too catroony, not detailed enough and way too bulky. Let's remind the people who made them that neither Shatner nor Nimoy ever had the body Schwarzenegger had in his best years. The SlideShow James Bond figures looked so much more human.

All in all though, I prefere the 9" Playmates line to all other Star Trek figure lines, including the Mego lines who weren't detailed enough.

My one problem with the Playmates 9" lines is a problem almost all Trek lines have. There was a TOS Spock, a Where No Man Has Gone Before Spock, even some "one episode" versions like a Piece of the Action Spock or an Amok Time Spock or a City on the Edge of Forever Spock. But they never made a TWOK-TSFS-TVH-TFF-TUC Spock. The only character they made with a more mature face and a red movie uniform was a Generations Kirk. I would love the complete cast with more mature faces (and a wider body for Scotty) in their TWOK-TSFS-TVH-TFF-TUC uniforms. I would even like some variations like scotty's utility vest, his anti-radiation suit, Kirk and Scotty in Bomber jacket, Kirk in his Generations vest and some in their Landing jacket. Because to me every time I think of kirk and Co, they look like that in my mind. The way I last saw them. Just like I don't remember my grandfather as the good looking young man he once was and I never met, but as the old man I knew when he was still around. When I think of Sean Connery, I see a man with a white beard (Hunt for red October => League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), not the 007 of the sixties.

Anyhow, I was disapointed when AA got the license and dicided not to make 9" lines. My interest in figures was gone. All I ever bought from AA was all of their Trek Tek and one ship. Guess which ship.

AW! I didn't mean to make you feel bad Artistix! :(

It's just something I noticed about you and thought it was funny and quirky...but in a good way!

Please don't give up talking about hairdos...our little foibles are what makes this community rock! I have my own particular fetish...you may have noticed ;)

.....and talking of quirkiness...I see we have Berns back!!

gothneo - August 19, 2006 01:36 PM (GMT)
Wow! Look at that crazzzzzy hair on Troi! Is that the one you had custom made?!

What? I arrive home early and catch you foibling with someone else!?!

Besides, what makes you read this section? Last time I checked you didn't even like clothed figures!

Yeah, I'm back all right.

Well I'll be jiggered....there's a name I recall

I would have loved to see more 9"ers too Bernsy. Do you recall the Deluxe Spock planned with the red uniform & a white tunic of some sort?
Deluxe line would have rocked my world I tells ya!! :D

I have planned on hunting down a crazy hair Crusher. I gather it was intended to match her look on the back of the box.

The figures in the middle in the pic above were the ones I got back from the Dollmaker.

I may not have liked the Mego figures when I was younger...but now that they are a Classic Star trek toy & we have soo much better versions...one tends to look at them more with a warm sense of nostalgia...same with the Galoob figures...all the Playmates lines (my new love Innerspace!).

Here are some pics of Spock & some others from Ricks unreleased page:
(Should we be talking about Playmates figures in the Mego section?)

**Sisko, Dax & Torres were not part of Deluxe.

And you didn't make me feel bad Jules...I just don't like to think I'm pissing people off too much! :P

Yes, I've seen the prototype of that figure. But it made me doubt the deluxe line would rock. You see, it had a face that was 20 years too young. It should have had a completely new sculptured face. The way Generations Kirk had another face than the TOS versions of Kirk. The deluxe Spock should have had a more mature face. And it didn't. Which made me doubt the entire line.
