In the middle ages Paganism literally meant the religion of the peasants. It's really a mish-mash of different ideas, and a crapload of gods for a crapload of differen't stuff. I think that witches during the witch-hunting era in Europe were apparently people from this religion, but I think it was just Christian dumbasses persecuting other religions trying to force other people to hold the same beliefs in them in clear contradiction of what their own religious text teaches.

The word pagan also refers to someone who holds beliefs that do not fit with what a religion teaches, not necessarily Christianity or Judaism(sp?). It is usually used to describe people who clame to be part of a religion but do many things in clear violation of what that religion teaches.



I also think that in the past there have been like an infinite amount of Christians who fucked up and didn't really understand their own religion, and that still has a huge affect today, even when now Christianity is a very mild religion that really only tries to help people. They would like other people to have their beliefs, but they certainly do not force that upon anyone and they are probably one of the more tollerable religion (tollerable as in towards other people's beliefs). There's still problems, obviously, but it's a lot better than it ever was in the past.

Of course there's like a billion different sects of Christianity so it's not even really fair to talk about it as a whole any more even though most of them are very very similar in their belief system.

It's just spelt Judaism and also Christianity places most of it's holidays on Pagan festival days so that people were familiar with them. Easter is even named after a Pagan godess.
