Title: Which should I get?
Bob Dole - August 5, 2007 03:29 AM (GMT)
I finally have enough for a computer but I don't know whether or not to get a PC or a Laptop. PCs have better hardware but laptops have the portability and I could use it for university although I probably wont much. Also if I got a PC it would be windows but I'm not sure if I would like a Mac or a Windows laptop.
QueenieKai - August 5, 2007 03:48 AM (GMT)
I'd get a laptop for the mobility, but most laptops are in Vista now.
ECUnlimited - August 5, 2007 04:18 AM (GMT)
Well, if you plan on actually using it for university, get a laptop. They are fast enough to do anything you need to do, as long as you aren't playing the latest PC games. I like laptops. It just makes things easier
Bob Dole - August 5, 2007 10:08 PM (GMT)
Well I talked to my cousin about it since he was in Engineering last year and he said he didn't use it much since you can't use it in class much. The only time he used it was in between classes. He said laptop since its more portable.
the.lamp - August 5, 2007 10:15 PM (GMT)
I am in the exact same predicament
Danielle - August 5, 2007 10:21 PM (GMT)
I'd say laptop, they're neat-o!!!
Yeah, three exclamation points.
Juno - August 5, 2007 10:30 PM (GMT)
Since you are going off to uni go for a laptop.
Menello - August 5, 2007 10:57 PM (GMT)
I have a laptop... it was really the only way to convince Mom and Dad to help me get one, since it's "for school". Barf.
QueenieKai - August 6, 2007 12:08 AM (GMT)
Well... which major are you going for?
I'm sure taking notes on a laptop would be a lot easier than taking notes on paper, loads neater. Like especially for science classes when you're not doing lab... or even English classes.
But then, that would depend on how fast you type.
Get a digital audio recorder too. Always good to have lectures on tape.

That's a great idea Queenie! I think I'm gonna try that!
Oh yeah- go laptop. There's internet almost anywhere on a university campus. That way you don't have to find a computer just to research stuff online...or play online games.
QueenieKai - August 6, 2007 03:37 AM (GMT)
I'm nothing if not a decent student. XD
Happy Joy Jo - August 6, 2007 04:11 AM (GMT)
the answer is simple
buy both
melie - August 6, 2007 02:54 PM (GMT)
That can be realllly expensive, though, if you don't play your cards right. For laptops, IBM's have always been my favorite, they're practically indestrucable. I can't tell you how many times my laptop has 'slipped' out of my hands or fallen off my bed. The worst that happened was my sister dropped it on the kitchen floor one time and I needed a new harddrive.
I'm pretty much all for laptops, being that you can take it virtually anywhere and so many stores/restaurants offer free WI-FI nowadays, and if you go to a hotel or something you can take it with for their WI-FI. Also cool if you go traveling, you can take pictures with a digital camera and then upload them to photobucket or whatever right away, in case your camera gets lost/stolen/etc.

Sweet mother.
I don't think I'd let you anywhere near my laptop.
Bob Dole - August 6, 2007 06:23 PM (GMT)
I've decided to get a PC since right now I rather have performance over mobility. If I really need a laptop in university I'll get one for the second year but I could probably survive with just writing notes. I probably wouldn't like typing shit in class anyways. Plus I'm going into engineering with is more math and drawings than notes so notes would be difficult to take on a laptop anyways.
Danielle - August 6, 2007 06:46 PM (GMT)
Way to own the poll, benny boy
wyvernis - August 6, 2007 06:59 PM (GMT)
cheaper to make your own desktop plus laptops burnout quickly if you use it for more complicated things

Hey_dude - August 7, 2007 04:33 AM (GMT)
Personally, I'd prefer a computer.
Sure the portability is a great plus for the laptop, but I feel that note taking by typing doesn't work for me, Info-pro proved that. Besides, my messy handwriting is stable (Surprise surprise) and I don't need to watch the pen as I write. But as for typing I often watch my fingers to make sure I hit the right keys though I can do without.
Besides, Computers are portable enough, the.lamp has moved his computer around on many numerous occasions for whatever reason. Sure you can't take a computer on bike while you can a laptop, but how often would you need to? And when you could do with a memory stick.

You can't take a computer into a lecture.
wyvernis - August 7, 2007 11:48 AM (GMT)
nor can you take one swimming
melie - August 7, 2007 03:58 PM (GMT)
As far as I know, you can't take a laptop swimming either.
Though I did see a computer meant for a hot tub once at a pool store, now that's just crazy.
wyvernis - August 7, 2007 04:44 PM (GMT)
taking a laptop swimming is probably the only way to stop it over heating from playing pong
WhitneyLynn - August 7, 2007 07:45 PM (GMT)
if you're going to university.. get the laptop
if you're doing any chem or bio labs, in most universities you can just download all of the lab notes and then add your own points to them.
plus i've heard quite a few people losing all of their files when they use a campus computer to do their homework
wyvernis - August 7, 2007 08:20 PM (GMT)
or rather than going to uni you could get a dead end job and do what the fuck you want
PixieDust - August 7, 2007 10:42 PM (GMT)
except you don't have as much money.
Syaoransbear - August 7, 2007 11:49 PM (GMT)
university isn't a guaranteed road to riches
QueenieKai - August 7, 2007 11:56 PM (GMT)
It isn't, but it sure helps for certain professions.
Like... if you're a surgeon. I don't want a surgeon to be operating on me if they've no degree. If you're an ER surgeon, that's big bucks.
Syaoransbear - August 7, 2007 11:58 PM (GMT)
obviously if you go to university because the career you want requires it, then go. But if you go to university because you think going to university is going to get you more money then you're dumb.
QueenieKai - August 8, 2007 12:05 AM (GMT)
Yeah, that's true too, I suppose.
It kind of depends on where you live though. Obviously, if you're in a small town like Mount Pulaski, you can just get a job and make money... but if you're in New York, I don't think any big paying company would hire you without a degree... unless you're in entertainment.

I've run Half Life 2 on high settings on mine and it didn't die. It runs it just fine, though it does get quite hot on the bottom, obviously.
Also, university is obviously becoming less and less important. But, it really depends what profession you decide going for.

This statement is so wrong it nearly leaves me speechless seriously. The jobs you would get in "Mount Pulaski" wouldn't be the same jobs you would need to go to Uni in New York to get. You would still need a degree to be a doctor in the same village. The same degree you would need in a big city. Rules just don't suddenly stop applying where there are less people. :^_^:

No, but rules do stop applying where there are relatives for every applicant. People here don't care for the education you have, they care for the relations to more important people that you have. If you are related to the right person, you could very well be a pharmacists or a nurse... which would normally require a degree for.
Mt. Pulaski is completely different from England. You can't compare something like England to rural America. Your countryside is still considered a city compared to Mt. Pulaski.
Cheamo - August 8, 2007 05:48 AM (GMT)
Well maybe university isn't really that important, but it's definitely pretty key to get some sort of post-secondary education/training so you can get a descent career.
But what the hell we're arguing the usefulness of laptops vs desktops here, not the value of higher education. I just think if all your using your lappy for is taking notes and shit in class you might as well go down to the local pawn shop and find some stolen piece of shit for 50 bucks since all you'll need for taking notes is a descent battery really. Then if you want a computer that is actual functional for gaming or whatever you still have the money to get it.
Plus aren't you taking Engineering Bob Dole? It seems like taking math notes on a computer would take way to long and be way to tedious.
Hey_dude - August 8, 2007 06:52 AM (GMT)
Not if you had a tablet to draw out the formulas and stuff.
Danielle - August 8, 2007 07:33 AM (GMT)
I'll tell you this right now, those things won't save you any time.
Bob Dole - August 8, 2007 08:58 AM (GMT)
Well my reasoning not to get a laptop.
1. I like gaming which is better on PC
2. I hate typing out notes in class especially if it is math equations or drawings
3. Labs and stuff can just be printed off at home when I need them
4. My cousin said he used he laptop like a desktop in university more, he only brought it to school to waste time between classes
wyvernis - August 8, 2007 10:44 AM (GMT)
i'm a surgeon and i didn't go to UNI

You know you can always get the notepad laptops.
