Title: baby cockatiels
Description: I split dis thread

Not that anyone(maybe andrew) cares but cole and I started breeding pretzel and petri. I put in a nestbox about two days ago. Today petri hunched over and presented herself to him and pretzel was like 'HOW DO'. He sort of tried to get on her, but after some failed attempts he masturbated beside her and then left her, still in her presentation position, to go eat.

I'm going to hand feed them so they'll go for $70 unless they are ugly, but free to friends and family. Maybe $30 to friends and family actually. If you're a faggot it's full price :)

Birds can...

masturbate?

Syaoransbear - October 25, 2007 03:55 PM (GMT)
Hells yeah, especially cockatiels. If they like you they try to masturbate with your hand/head. I posted a video of woody masturbating a while ago but the quality was shitty.

Zangk - October 26, 2007 12:07 AM (GMT)
Crazy, you could make a fortune!

How are you advertising outside of friends and family?

Banello - October 26, 2007 02:05 AM (GMT)
I've gotta see this bird masturbation. It's intriguing. In a non-creepy way.

the.lamp - October 26, 2007 02:46 AM (GMT)
depending on the size of the clutch I'd like to keep one

Banello - October 26, 2007 03:50 AM (GMT)
A clutch of eggs. That's what it's called, right?

the.lamp - October 26, 2007 06:26 AM (GMT)
I believe that's what I said

www.kijiji.com. It's free.

Baby Handfed socialized pearl cockatiels usually go for $120-$250, so mine will be a steal. Plus I'm going to wean them onto pellets and fresh fruit so they don't have to eat seeds for the rest of their life. Birds straight from breeders are the best, but since we're not mass breeding these birds are going to get tonnes of human interaction early on so they are going to be really awesome friendly birds.

Unfortunately, the babies probably won't make it because it's Petri's first clutch and usually the first clutch is a dud.

Ps. they had sex today

it's true they did it while I played HL2. I turned around and pretzel was mounting her

film it next time I guess, WEEROS GONE WILD

Wow, this is so cool! It's like the Discovery channel, but in text. And actually, I've never seen animal sex on the discovery channel.

Can birds get "fixed" in the same way dogs and cats can? Is there a process for that? I imagine it would be a bit different... yet still interesting.

Syaoransbear - October 26, 2007 05:23 PM (GMT)
I don't think it's possible for them to be fixed. If it is, it's really expensive, and really, really dangerous. Plus it's really easy to make birds not breed too. If you don't give them a breeding box, 90% of the time they won't breed. If they still do it, just make them sleep more or change the toys in their cage around. They are super sensitive. Woody and Petri never had sex and they were together for 3-4 years.

Plus birds don't get knocked up like we do. They can have sex, but 'choose' not to lay eggs because of unsuitable conditions. They can 'choose' to lay eggs without having sex too (they'd be infertile obviously).

Banello - October 26, 2007 06:28 PM (GMT)
So what's this breeding box? Is it a place for the female to lay eggs?

This topic makes me want to get a bird, but I don't think it would get enough sun light (if that matters), and it would probably be loud and I don't want that either...

the.lamp - October 26, 2007 07:56 PM (GMT)
they stay in my basement room with not very much sunlight (I do take them upstairs and outside if weather permits though). As for loudness, Cockatiels really aren't loud unless you rile them up (depending on the bird, of course, some are quiet and shy some are loud and angry). Even so, covering the cage will shut them up in any situation.

The only thing is Cockatiels are dusty as hell, I have an air purifier in my room and it pretty much takes care of it; if it gets really bad I'll open the window and that tends to clear it up pretty good.

There's my pro/con speech on Cockatiels

Danielle - October 26, 2007 08:43 PM (GMT)
I had a cockatiel and it was loud, even if you covered it up.

Banello - October 26, 2007 10:31 PM (GMT)
Didn't it like sirens and stuff? That sucked.

That's weird. My cockatiel Woody is the loudest, but when you cover him up he doesn't make a peep. Plus his calls are tolerable and I don't notice them at all. What happened to your cockatiel? Cockatiels live for like 20 years.

Menello, if you get a female cockatiel, you'll barely hear a word out of it. Boys like to whistle all the time when they are younger, but girls make a very low, monotone noise usually only when there are other cockatiels around.

You can stick a cockatiel in the basement if you give it some vitamin supplements that have vitamin D3. They cost like 10 bucks and last a year.

They did it a few hours ago; me and cole watched and laughed. We made a breeding box out of cole's top dresser drawer. It's really retarded but they like it and they have awkward sex on the edge of the drawer. A breeding box can be any box with a hole in it. Our breeding box it carboard with a wood bottom because it's stuffed in a drawer. Cockatiels don't really make nests, they just find holes in trees and lay their eggs in there.

Banello - October 27, 2007 04:20 PM (GMT)
Vitamin D3 eh? Cause they aren't getting sunlight? Gotcha.

Now, how much would a female cockatiel, complete with cage and accessories probably cost me? Cause I'm not the richest guy ever...

Danielle - October 27, 2007 05:32 PM (GMT)
We gave my cockatiel to a friend of mine. Every time a siren went off or at 4am he would start making a siren type noise himself. Twas annoying and too loud, so my parents made me give him away, I was like 10.

Syaoransbear - October 27, 2007 06:01 PM (GMT)
A decent cockatiel cage would be about $60. Pellet and seed bags are like $5 each, and if you got the cockatiel from me I'd sell it to you for like $30 or something(depends on the clutch). A feeder and a water feeder cost $4 together but the cage probably comes with them, cuttle bones $4, toys would probably cost you $25 total, and depending on the cage some more perches would be $5, and vitamins for $10.

The pellets and seeds will probably last you several months, and the vitamins and cuttle bones would too. So like around $150 for everything. That's the price of just one cockatiel at petsmart. Cole's cockatiel was $220 at petland. Birds are expensive, but the total price is pretty final. I think the only other thing cole has bought for his bird since he got it is millet spray that he never feeds his bird heh. Niether of us have to buy seed again while I work at petsmart because if a bag gets "accidently" ripped or it expires, my managers write it off and give it to me.

The only thing you really need to buy ever again is the seed, pellets and vitamins like once a year.

the.lamp - October 27, 2007 06:29 PM (GMT)
basically really cheap after initial cost

Banello - October 27, 2007 06:40 PM (GMT)
So like, high initial cost, low maitenance costs. Gotcha.

I'll talk to Crystal about it, I'll see what she thinks about birds. This might be something worth looking into as far as pets go :)

Danielle - October 27, 2007 10:03 PM (GMT)
You work at Petsmart :(:(:( I'm so jealous

Syaoransbear - October 28, 2007 12:50 AM (GMT)
You should apply, you'd definitely get hired.

I bought a digital camera today because it was super cheap and my camera phone sucks.

... and there was already a fucking egg there. She laid it either today or yesterday. Pretzel was sitting on it for some reason.

WOAH, Where's the NSFW tags!? My mom saw that!

Plus birds are cool, but animals in general cost too much money.... unlike video games :$

Narcoleptic Insomniac - October 29, 2007 05:11 PM (GMT)
It looks like pretzel is breaking petri.

Syaoransbear - October 30, 2007 05:59 AM (GMT)
Petri laid another egg today + had sex some more. I don't really know how you can have sex safely with a huge breakable egg in your cooch.

Banello - October 30, 2007 10:35 PM (GMT)
I guess they really like sex.

Oven Ban - October 30, 2007 10:47 PM (GMT)
Bow chika wow wow

That looks alot like a cadbury mini egg.

Banello - October 31, 2007 03:42 PM (GMT)
I want to paint it, black.

Zangk - October 31, 2007 10:13 PM (GMT)
Wow, I now know why people would ever go in the bird business.
  • You have all the little eggs to eat that you want, mmmmmm
  • You can let those eggs hatch and eat the chicks, mmmmmm
  • Or maybe let them grow and have wings and cockatiel breat, mmmm

Now for a serious note, Do the birds look after the baby bird when it hatches or are you going to intervene or something?

Syaoransbear - November 1, 2007 12:40 AM (GMT)
The parents will feed the babies for the first 14 days. After that I'm going to pull them from the nest and begin hand feeding them until they are weaned. I might wait *18 days, though, because the parents give special bacteria to their young that I can't replicate.

Third egg was laid yesterday.

************I MEAN DAYS

Second egg. First egg. Third egg. The third egg didn't have a point so it didn't stretch her out good enough before it got to the middle, so there's blood.

Syaoransbear - November 2, 2007 07:07 AM (GMT)
The fourth wasn't laid today. I'm pretty sure cole was wrong about when she laid the third egg since it doesn't make sense to me. The first egg is almost for sure infertile, the second egg possibly too. I candled them and I couldn't see any growing embryo. I'm going to wait 8 more days for them to develop, and if I don't see anything I'm going to remove the eggs so she lays more

I really don't want to remove them though... I don't want to just throw them in the garbage, that's... weird.

Banello - November 2, 2007 03:53 PM (GMT)
Where'd you learn so much about birds? Just from having them around for a long time? Or have you actually done research on all this stuff? Because you seem to have an explanation for everything.

Ps. I like scrambled eggs ;)

Syaoransbear - November 2, 2007 04:47 PM (GMT)
the internets! I did research for a couple weeks before cole and I decided to breed, but most of it I had read a long time ago. You can't find anything on birds without there being a section on breeding them. Plus lots of stuff can go wrong so I wanted to know everything.

Syaoransbear - November 2, 2007 11:36 PM (GMT)
fourth laid today
